Almost everyone has had the experience: you open the biscuits meaning to have one, and somehow the packet is empty. It feels less like a choice and more like a pull. That feeling is real, and it is worth taking seriously. But the phrase sugar addiction gets thrown around as if it settles the matter, when the science underneath is genuinely split. Understanding where the evidence is strong and where it is thin tells you more about how to handle sugar than any scary label does.

When people say they are addicted to sugar, they usually mean something looser: they crave it, they eat more than they planned, and they feel they cannot leave it alone. Those experiences are real. The question is whether they are caused by sugar acting like a drug, or by something about how and when we eat it.

This distinction is not academic hair-splitting. If sugar were chemically addictive the way nicotine is, the answer would be strict avoidance. Both animal and human work has mapped real overlap between how the brain responds to sweet taste and how it responds to some drugs.

Here is the catch. Dopamine is not a drug detector. It rises for anything your brain finds rewarding and worth repeating: a hug, a win, a good meal, sex, music. A reward response is exactly what you would expect from a food that kept our ancestors alive. One narrative review catalogued how sugar in rodents can produce a striking number of the features used to define an addictive substance. Taken alone, that sounds damning.

But the detail that changes everything is access. A large review of this literature concluded that the addiction-like behaviour in animals appears mainly when sugar is given intermittently, switched on and off, rather than freely available. Rats with steady access do not binge the same way. In other words, the pattern of restriction and reward may be doing much of the work, not the sugar molecule by itself. That maps uncomfortably well onto human dieting, where cutting sweets out completely often sets up the exact binge it was meant to prevent.

A detailed review in the European Journal of Nutrition found little evidence to support the idea that humans are addicted to sugar in the pharmacological sense. Where people show addiction-like eating, it tends to track with the overall food experience, the combination of sugar, fat, salt, texture, and reward, rather than sugar on its own. Almost nobody binges on plain table sugar by the spoon.

This is why many scientists prefer the term food addiction, or better still, addictive-like eating, over sugar addiction. The behaviour is real and can be genuinely distressing. But pinning it on one molecule oversimplifies both the cause and the fix. It also risks turning an ordinary food into a forbidden substance, which for many people makes the relationship with it worse, not better.

Why it still feels compulsive

None of this means the struggle is imaginary. Several ordinary mechanisms can make sweet food feel like it has a grip on you, without any of them being chemical addiction.

  • Restriction rebound. Banning a food tends to increase how much you want it and how much you eat when you finally cave. This mirrors the intermittent-access effect from the animal studies.
  • Hyper-palatable design. Many sweet foods are engineered to combine sugar with fat and salt so they are extremely easy to overeat. The food is built to be hard to stop eating.
  • Habit and cues. The 3pm slump, the film with a snack, the reward after a hard day. Much of what feels like craving is a well-drilled routine firing on schedule.
  • Real hunger and low energy. Skipping meals or under-eating protein and fibre leaves you genuinely hungry, and sugar is the fastest, most available fix.

The useful thing about this list is that every item has a practical response. None of them require you to treat sugar as poison.

  1. Eat enough, especially protein and fibre. A genuinely satisfying meal blunts the drive for a quick sugar hit far more reliably than willpower. Most people underestimate how much a low-protein breakfast sets up an afternoon of cravings.
  2. Loosen the ban, not the goal. Aiming to reduce sugar works better than swearing it off forever. Total bans tend to trigger the restriction rebound that makes the problem worse.
  3. Change the environment. Keep the easiest-to-overeat foods out of arm's reach at home. You do not have to resist what is not in front of you, and willpower is a poor substitute for a good default.
  4. Break the cue, keep the reward. If a treat is glued to a habit, swap what happens at that moment rather than white-knuckling through it. A walk, a coffee, or fruit at 3pm can retrain the routine.
