A push up trains your chest, shoulders, and triceps to move your body up and down. The planche asks something completely different: hold your whole body off the ground, parallel to it, on straight arms, with nothing but your hands touching the floor. The bridge between the two is not more push ups. It is learning to lean, and giving your shoulders and elbows the years they quietly need.

Why push ups do not lead straight to a planche
It feels logical that a stronger push up should eventually become a planche. It does not work that way. A push up is a bent arm movement: your elbows flex and extend, and your chest and triceps do the work of moving you. The planche is a straight arm hold. Your elbows stay locked, and the load lands on the front of your shoulders and on the connective tissue around the elbow and wrist.
Because the two skills load your body so differently, being able to do 40 push ups tells you almost nothing about your planche. Plenty of people with a big push up cannot hold a five second tuck planche, and that is normal. What you are really building is straight arm scapular strength, the ability to push the floor away with locked elbows while your shoulder blades hold a strong, protracted position.
Push ups build the muscles that bend your arms. The planche builds the muscles and tendons that keep your arms straight under load. They are related skills, not the same road.
What you actually need before you start
You do not need to be freakishly strong to begin planche work, but you do need a base that protects your joints. Rushing past this section is the most common reason people end up with cranky wrists and a sore front shoulder.
- A clean, full range push up for at least 10 to 15 reps, so your basic pressing strength is solid.
- A comfortable 30 second plank with your shoulders pushed away from the floor, not sagging.
- Enough wrist mobility to hold weight on flat palms without pain, plus a short daily wrist prep routine.
- The ability to hold a hollow body position on your back, which teaches the tight midline the planche demands.
The planche loads your wrists in extension for long holds. Spend two to three minutes warming them up every session: gentle rocks forward and back on flat palms, fists, and fingertips. Wrist pain is the number one thing that stalls planche training, and it is almost entirely preventable.
The planche lean: the drill that unlocks everything
If you take one thing from this guide, take the lean. Start in a push up position with straight arms. Now slowly shift your shoulders forward, past your hands, keeping your elbows locked and your body in one straight line. The further your shoulders travel in front of your wrists, the more your own weight tips toward your hands, and the closer you get to the feeling of a planche.
- Set up in a straight arm plank. Hands under shoulders, elbows locked, body in a straight line from head to heels. Push the floor away so your upper back rounds slightly.
- Lean forward from the ankles. Shift your whole body forward as one rigid unit until your shoulders are ahead of your hands. Your heels will rise. Keep the elbows straight the entire time.
- Find the edge and hold. Lean until it feels genuinely hard to keep your elbows locked, then hold for time. This is your working position, not a rep.
- Add lean, not reps. Progress by leaning a little further each week so your shoulders travel further past your hands. That deeper lean is your progressive overload.
The lean teaches the exact straight arm shoulder strength the planche needs, at an intensity you control to the centimetre. It is the single most transferable drill in planche training, and you can do it anywhere with zero equipment.
The tuck to full ladder
Alongside the lean, you build the hold itself by shortening then gradually lengthening your body. A tucked body is short and light on your shoulders. A straight body is long and brutally heavy. You move down this ladder over months, not weeks.

The jump from advanced tuck to straddle is the one that humbles almost everyone, because straightening your back suddenly loads your shoulders far more. This is where the straddle is your friend: spreading your legs shortens the lever and lets you keep progressing while your strength catches up. Do not skip it to reach for the full planche early.
Pick one stage you can hold for a few seconds with locked elbows. Train it two to three times a week, adding a second here and there. When you can hold it cleanly for around 10 seconds, move to the next rung. Chasing the next stage before you own the current one just builds bad, bent arm habits.
Why patience is a training variable, not a personality trait
Here is the part most planche tutorials skip. Your muscles get stronger quickly. Your tendons and other connective tissue adapt much more slowly. Reviews of how human tendons respond to training show they strengthen and stiffen in response to loading, but on a slower timeline than muscle, which means your pressing strength can outrun the tissue holding your joints together.
In planche work, that gap shows up at the elbow and the front of the shoulder, the exact places a locked arm hold loads hardest. If you add lean and difficulty faster than your tendons can keep up, you do not get stronger faster. You get a nagging elbow or shoulder that forces weeks off. The people who reach a planche are rarely the strongest. They are the ones who progressed slowly enough to stay healthy.
Sharp or pinpoint pain at the inner elbow or the front of the shoulder is a stop sign, not something to push through. Reduce your lean, cut volume, and give it time. Straight arm skills reward consistency over months. If joint pain lingers, see a physiotherapist or doctor before loading it again.
A simple weekly structure
Planche work is a skill, so it responds to frequent, high quality practice rather than a few exhausting sessions. Treat it like technique, done fresh, not like a finisher when you are already fried.
- Train it 2 to 3 days a week. On non consecutive days, near the start of your session when your shoulders are fresh and your form is clean.
- Warm up the joints first. Two to three minutes of wrist prep and some scapular push ups to wake up the shoulder blades before any hard holds.
- Do a few short, quality holds. Around 4 to 6 sets of your chosen lean or tuck stage, each held 5 to 10 seconds, with full rest between. Stop before your form breaks.
- Keep training normal push work too. Regular push ups, dips, and pressing keep your bent arm strength and muscle mass growing alongside the skill.
- Deload when you feel beaten up. Every few weeks, take an easier week. Connective tissue recovers on a slower clock than muscle, so the rest is doing real work.
From a solid push up, a tuck planche often takes several months of consistent work, and a full planche can take a year or more. That is not a failure of your training. That is the normal price of a straight arm skill, and knowing it up front keeps you from quitting at the point where most people would.
