The hanging leg raise looks like the ultimate ab move, and it can be. But watch a busy gym and most people are just swinging their legs up with their hip flexors while their abs stay soft and along for the ride. The difference between a great ab exercise and a mediocre hip flexor exercise comes down to one thing that happens at the top of the movement, and almost everyone skips it. Learn that one detail and the hanging leg raise becomes one of the best things you can do for the lower part of your abs.
The short version
- The whole exercise is the **pelvic tilt** at the top: rolling your hips up toward your ribs is what makes your abs work.
- If you only lift your legs and stop, you are mostly training hip flexors, not abs.
- Curl the pelvis up so your tailbone tucks under, do not just raise straight legs to a right angle and drop them.
- Stop the swinging. Momentum feels productive but takes the muscle out of the work.
- Build up honestly: knee raises, then bent legs, then straight legs. There is no shame in starting from the bottom.
What you are actually trying to train
Your rectus abdominis, the muscle people call the six pack, has one main job: to bend your spine forward, curling your ribcage and your pelvis toward each other. It does not lift your legs. Lifting your thigh toward your torso is the job of your hip flexors, a group of muscles at the front of the hip that includes the powerful rectus femoris.
This is the trap. When you hang and raise your legs to a right angle, that whole movement is hip flexion. Your abs barely have to do anything. To bring the abs in, you have to add a second movement that most people never learn: curling your pelvis up and under, so your tailbone tucks toward your belly button. That curl is spinal flexion, and that is the part your abs own.
Raising your legs is hip flexors. Curling your pelvis up is abs. A proper hanging leg raise does both, and the second part is the one that counts.
Why the pelvic tilt matters, in plain terms
Muscle activity studies back this up. Electromyography, which measures how hard a muscle is working, shows that hanging leg raises produce strong activation of the lower rectus abdominis and the obliques, more than a basic crunch, but only when the movement includes a genuine posterior pelvic tilt, meaning that curl of the pelvis toward the ribs.
Research on leg raising also shows the split clearly: in the early part of the movement, roughly the first 45 degrees of lifting the thigh, the rectus femoris hip flexor does most of the work. Ab activation climbs once you go past that and the pelvis starts to tilt. In other words, the top of the range, the part people skip by dropping their legs early, is exactly where the abs finally switch on.
The ab work happens in the top portion, when your pelvis curls up. Cut the movement short and you leave the ab part on the table. Finish the curl and you finally reach it.
How to do it properly
Here is the movement done right. Take it slowly at first, because the pelvic curl is a coordination skill as much as a strength one.
- Hang from a bar with a solid grip. Shoulders active, not fully relaxed and dangling. A slight pull down through your shoulder blades keeps you stable and stops you swinging.
- Kill any swing first. Start from a still, dead hang. If you are already swinging, wait until you settle. Momentum is the single biggest thief of ab work in this movement.
- Raise your legs under control. Bring your legs up toward a right angle. This first part is hip flexion, and that is fine. It is the setup for the important bit.
- Curl your pelvis up. Now the key move. Tuck your tailbone up toward your ribs, as if trying to touch your pelvis to your belly button. This is the ab contraction. Your hips should roll up and back.
- Lower slowly and fully. Reverse it under control. Do not just drop. The lowering phase, where your abs resist gravity, is worth as much as the lift. Come back to a controlled hang before the next rep.
Quality beats quantity here by a mile. A handful of clean reps with a real pelvic curl does far more than 20 swinging leg swings. Aim for 3 sets of 8 to 12 controlled reps and add reps or a harder variation over time.
A realistic progression
Straight leg hanging raises are hard, and there is no shame in earning them. Trying to jump straight to the full version is how people end up swinging. Work up through these stages, only moving on when you can do the current one cleanly with a real pelvic tilt.

If you start rocking to fling your legs up, you have gone too heavy or too advanced. Drop back a stage. A swung rep trains momentum, not muscle. Rest between reps and reset to a dead hang if you need to.
Common problems and fixes
Two issues come up constantly. Grip giving out before the abs, and feeling the movement only in the hips.
If your grip fails first, that is normal and it is limiting your ab training. Use lifting straps, or hang from ab straps that support you under the arms, so your abs are the thing that tires, not your forearms. If you feel it only in your hip flexors and never in your abs, you are almost certainly skipping the pelvic curl. Slow right down, do the floor version to learn the tilt, and consciously roll your hips up at the top of every rep. The moment you feel your lower abs cramp slightly on the curl, you have found it.
