The researchers framed it as pushing back cardiac aging in a way that could help prevent a form of heart failure. The two catches worth naming: the benefit needed to be sustained over years, not weeks, and it worked in people who were healthy to begin with, not those with existing disease.
This was not a quick fix. The heart benefit came from consistent training sustained over two years, several times a week, mixing easy aerobic work with some harder efforts. The dose is real, but so is the commitment.
How much cardio you actually need after 40
You do not need to replicate a two-year research protocol to protect your heart. The baseline that carries most of the benefit is the same guideline that applies to all adults: 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity, plus muscle-strengthening work on two or more days. Moderate means brisk enough to breathe harder and talk but not sing.
- Sedentary right now? Start with short, regular walks and build up gradually. The jump from nothing to a little gives the biggest single drop in heart risk.
- Building a real base? Work toward 150 minutes of moderate cardio a week, spread across most days rather than one big session.

How to start safely after 40
