Falls are not bad luck

What kind of training actually works
The winning recipe is not cardio, and it is not stretching. It is a combination of balance challenges and leg strength, built up progressively so it stays hard enough to keep adapting. The best-studied example is the Otago Exercise Programme, a set of leg-strengthening and balance-retraining exercises plus a walking plan, developed and repeatedly tested for exactly this purpose.
Balance training
Balance is a skill, and like any skill it improves with practice that pushes it. That means gradually reducing your base of support and challenging your body to stay stable: standing with feet together, then one foot in front of the other, then on one leg, then adding gentle movement. The rule is to work at the edge of steady, always with something sturdy to grab. Balance that is never challenged does not improve.

You do not need a gym or equipment. These are gentle starting points. The single most important safety rule is to do balance work next to a sturdy support, such as a kitchen counter or the back of a solid chair, so you always have something to catch yourself on.
- Sit-to-stands. From a sturdy chair, stand up and sit down slowly without using your hands if you can. This builds the exact leg strength that gets you off the floor and recovers a stumble. Start with a few, build up over weeks.
- Heel-to-toe stand, then walk. Place one foot directly in front of the other, heel touching toe, and hold. Progress to slow heel-to-toe walking along a counter. This trains the narrow-base balance a fall demands.
- Single-leg stand. Holding your support, lift one foot slightly and balance. Aim to build up your hold time, then progress to lighter support. This is one of the most direct balance challenges there is.
- Calf raises. Holding your support, rise onto the balls of your feet and lower slowly. Strong calves and ankles are central to steady standing and quick recovery.
- Keep it regular. Proven programmes run about three times a week. Little and often beats an occasional big effort. Consistency is what makes balance and strength stick.
