Concurrent training just means training strength and cardio in the same programme, in the same block of your life, rather than picking one and ignoring the other. For years it had a bad reputation: the fear was that cardio would eat your muscle and stall your lifts. The best current research tells a calmer story. When you arrange the two sensibly, you can keep building strength and muscle while getting the heart, lung, and health benefits that only cardio delivers. The whole skill is in the programming, not in choosing a side.

What concurrent training means
Concurrent training is simply doing both resistance training and aerobic training within the same programme, rather than dedicating a block only to one. Most people who want to be strong and healthy are, whether they call it that or not, concurrent trainers. You lift to build muscle and strength, and you do cardio for your heart, your endurance, and your general health. The question is never really whether to do both. It is how to fit them together so they help rather than hinder.
The old worry was the interference effect, the idea that endurance training sends your muscles a partly opposite signal to lifting and cancels out your gains. There is a real mechanism behind that, but its size in practice is far smaller than gym lore claims. Understanding how small, and what makes it bigger or smaller, is what lets you build a plan that genuinely does both.
Concurrent training is strength plus cardio in one plan. The interference between them is real but small, and the conditions that make it worse are exactly the ones you control.
What the research actually shows
The clearest picture comes from a 2022 systematic review by Schumann and colleagues that pooled a large body of studies. Its conclusion was reassuring and specific. Adding aerobic training to a strength programme did not compromise muscle growth. It did not compromise maximal strength, the kind you show in a heavy single. The one outcome that suffered was explosive strength, the ability to produce force very fast, which matters enormously to a sprinter or jumper and much less to someone training for size, health, or general strength.
That review also found the small loss of explosive power was most evident when the endurance and strength work were done in the same session. Separate them, and even that narrow cost tends to shrink. An earlier meta-analysis had already shown that interference scaled with dose: more frequent and longer endurance sessions, and running more than cycling, produced bigger losses. In other words, the studies where gains really suffered were the ones where people trained almost like endurance athletes on top of lifting.

Why timing and freshness do most of the work
Strip the science back and most of what people call interference is simpler than duelling molecular switches. It is fatigue. A hard endurance session drains your legs, your fuel stores, and your nervous system. Lift heavy in that state and the quality of your lifting drops. You grind fewer good reps and move less load, so you get a weaker training stimulus, not because a pathway was blocked but because you turned up to the important work already tired.
This is why the same total training can either interfere or not, depending purely on arrangement. Do your hard cardio on one day and your heavy lower-body lifting on another and the two barely touch. Do them back to back on the same afternoon, cardio first, and the lifting suffers. The molecular conflict is real but small. The scheduling conflict is the one that quietly costs most people their gains, and it is entirely within your control.
Blaming cardio itself and cutting it out. The usual problem is not the cardio, it is doing it hard, and right before the lifting that matters. Fix the arrangement and you keep both without a real cost.
How to program both in one plan
Turning the research into a plan is straightforward. You are not trying to eliminate every last molecule of interference. You are keeping it far below the level that matters while you collect the health and conditioning that cardio provides.
- Separate your hardest efforts. Put your hardest cardio and your heaviest lifting on different days, or at least several hours apart. This single move removes most of the same-session interference the research identified.
- If they share a session, lift first. When one workout has both, do the heavy lifting while you are fresh, then finish with cardio. Fatiguing your legs and nervous system with hard cardio before your lifts is the exact recipe the studies warn against.
- Lean on low-impact cardio. Cycling, rowing, and incline walking interfere less than a lot of running and are gentler on recovery, so they stack far more easily onto a lifting programme, especially near leg days.
- Keep the endurance dose sensible. A few moderate sessions a week for your heart is nowhere near the endurance-athlete volumes where gains genuinely suffered. Public health guidance points to about 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week, which fits alongside lifting.
- Feed and recover the extra work. Cardio adds to your total workload. Eat enough, hit your protein whether from meat, fish, dairy, or plant sources like tofu, tempeh, lentils, beans, and soy, and protect your sleep. A shortfall there, not the interference effect, is what costs most people muscle.
A weekly template that does both
Here is one way to lay out a week of concurrent training built around four lifting sessions and a couple of cardio sessions. Notice that the hardest cardio never sits right before the heaviest lifting for the same muscles.

The pattern is what matters, not the exact days. Heavy lifting gets fresh legs and a fresh nervous system. Cardio lands on lifting-light days or after the lifting when they share time. Nothing is sacrificed. You keep serious lifting at the centre and the cardio your health needs around it, and you simply stop making them fight.
Concurrent training is not a compromise, it is the normal way to be both strong and healthy. Separate the hard efforts, lift first when they share a day, keep the cardio sensible and low-impact, and eat and sleep to match. Do that and you get both, with almost nothing lost.
