Somewhere along the way, coffee got a reputation as a fluid thief, the drink you have to cancel out with an equal glass of water. It is one of the stickiest bits of nutrition folklore, repeated in gyms and offices as settled fact. It is also mostly wrong. Caffeine does have a mild effect on urine output, but for the way most people actually drink coffee, that effect is small and is easily outweighed by the water in the cup. The upshot is simpler than the myth: your morning coffee is counting toward your hydration, not against it.

Where the myth came from
The belief has a kernel of truth, which is why it survives. Caffeine is a genuine diuretic, meaning it can increase how much urine your kidneys make. Early studies that showed this often used people who had gone without caffeine for days or weeks, then gave them a big dose. Under those conditions, urine output really did jump, and the finding got generalised into a blanket rule: coffee dries you out, so drink extra water to compensate.
The problem is that this scenario looks nothing like how most people drink coffee. Almost nobody abstains for a fortnight and then downs a large caffeine hit. Regular drinkers sip it daily, and their bodies adjust. When researchers studied coffee the way people actually consume it, the tidy rule fell apart.
Caffeine can raise urine output, but the effect is strongest in people who rarely have it and shrinks with regular use. The myth generalised an extreme scenario to everyday coffee.
Why regular drinkers barely notice it
The key word is tolerance. A review of the research on caffeine and fluid balance concluded that a strong diuretic response mainly appears at higher doses, roughly 250 to 300 milligrams or more, and mostly in people who have not had caffeine for a while. In habitual drinkers, the body develops tolerance to this effect and it becomes much smaller. The same review found no support for the idea that normal caffeinated drinks, consumed as part of everyday life, lead to fluid loss greater than the volume you drank or leave you poorly hydrated.
This is why your daily flat white behaves very differently from a one-off jolt after a caffeine-free stretch. Your kidneys are already used to it. The mild diuretic nudge is there, but it is dwarfed by the roughly 200 to 300 millilitres of water riding along in the cup.
When coffee was tested against water
The most convincing evidence comes from a study that pitted coffee directly against water in regular coffee drinkers living their normal lives. Fifty habitual drinkers spent three-day blocks drinking either four cups of coffee a day or the same volume of water, while researchers measured a battery of hydration markers, including total body water, urine volume, and blood concentration.
The result was blunt: there were no meaningful differences between the coffee days and the water days on any hydration marker. In the researchers' own framing, moderate coffee provided similar hydrating qualities to water for these drinkers. That is about as clear a rebuttal of the fluid-thief myth as you could ask for.

When caffeine's effect does matter
None of this makes caffeine's diuretic effect imaginary, and there are situations where it is worth a thought. If you rarely drink caffeine and then take a large dose, say a big pre-workout supplement or several strong coffees in a row, you can expect a more noticeable short-term rise in urine output because you have no tolerance built up. It is real, it is temporary, and it is not a reason to fear a normal coffee.
The other honest caveat is what you do to the coffee. A plain black coffee or one with a splash of milk or plant milk is a hydrating, near-zero-calorie drink. A large sugary, syrupy coffee-shop creation is a different beast for your calories and blood sugar, even if its fluid still counts. The hydration question and the sugar question are separate, and it is the added sugar, not the coffee, that is worth watching.

What to do in practice
The practical version is refreshingly simple. Enjoy your coffee, count it toward your fluid, and stop trying to offset it glass for glass. Total daily fluid from all sources is what matters, and general guidance puts adequate total water at around 2.0 litres a day for women and 2.5 litres for men, coffee included.
- Count coffee as fluid. Your daily cups contribute to your total intake. Do not subtract them or add a compensating glass of water for each one.
- Keep it mostly plain. Black, or with milk or plant milk, keeps it a low-calorie, hydrating drink. Save the syrupy versions for occasional treats and judge those on sugar, not water.
- Mind timing over volume. Late-afternoon caffeine can hurt that night's sleep, which matters far more for how you feel than any tiny fluid effect.
- Adjust if you are the sensitive type. If large amounts clearly make you urinate a lot, cut the dose rather than drowning it in extra water.
