This question gets buried under gym-lore and tribalism. One camp says you need iron or you are wasting your time. The other says weights are pointless and calisthenics is all you need. Both are overstating it. The physiology of muscle growth does not care whether the load came from a dumbbell or your own bodyweight, so yes, you can build real muscle with bodyweight alone. But bodyweight training makes one specific thing harder, and understanding what that is turns a vague argument into a clear plan.

This fits what we understand about how muscle grows. Growth is driven mainly by mechanical tension, taking a muscle through a challenging range under load and repeating sets close to the point of failure. A hard set of push ups near failure and a hard set of bench press near failure both deliver that stimulus. The source of the resistance is beside the point.
When effort and effective load are similar, bodyweight training and weight training produce similar muscle growth. The barbell is a tool for delivering tension, not a magic ingredient your muscles require.
The one thing bodyweight makes harder
Here is where the honest answer earns its condition. Muscle grows when you keep giving it a reason to, by making training gradually harder over time. This is called progressive overload, and it is the one rule that reliably drives growth. Reviews of training volume show a clear dose-response: keep pushing the stimulus up and the muscle keeps adapting.
With weights, progression is easy. You add a couple of kilograms to the bar and you have overloaded the muscle. With bodyweight, your load is fixed at whatever you weigh, so you cannot just add plates. This is the entire reason people believe bodyweight training stalls. It does not stall because it is weak, it stalls when people do the same easy version forever and never make it harder.
The failure mode of bodyweight training is not lack of load, it is lack of progression. If you can already do thirty easy push ups, more of them barely grows muscle. You have to raise the difficulty, not just the rep count.
How to progressively overload with no weights
Once you know progression is the job, bodyweight gives you several honest ways to do it. You are not stuck. You just use levers other than the number on a dumbbell.

Whichever lever you use, take your hard sets close to failure, roughly one to three reps left in the tank. Research on light loads shows they build plenty of muscle when the set is taken near failure, which is exactly what bodyweight training relies on.
Where bodyweight training genuinely struggles
An honest answer names the limits too. Bodyweight training is not equally good at everything.
Legs are the toughest case
Your legs are strong. They move your whole bodyweight around all day, so a two-leg squat is often too easy to grow them much once you are past beginner stage. The fix is single-leg work, split squats, step ups, and eventually pistol squats, which put most of your bodyweight through one leg, plus higher reps and added load. It is doable, but legs are where bodyweight-only training asks the most creativity.
Very strong lifters need external load
If you already do many strict pull ups and one-arm push up progressions, pure bodyweight can struggle to keep overloading you fast enough. This is why advanced calisthenics athletes add weighted vests, dip belts, and bands. The principle is the same, they are just adding the external load that a barbell would have provided.
None of this means bodyweight cannot build an impressive, muscular physique. Plenty of people prove otherwise. It means the tool has edges, and knowing them lets you plug the gaps instead of stalling.
