The lateral raise is the exercise that builds the round, capped look of the shoulders, and the eternal gym argument is whether to do it with a cable or a dumbbell. The two versions feel wildly different. The dumbbell feels easy at the bottom and brutal at the top, while the cable feels hard the whole way. That difference is real, it comes from physics, and for years people assumed it meant one was clearly better for growth. A recent study put that assumption to the test, and the answer is more useful than the usual dogma.

Why they feel so different
The whole difference comes down to how the resistance lines up with the movement. When you raise a dumbbell out to the side, the load is gravity pulling straight down. At the bottom, your arm hangs near your body and there is almost no leverage against gravity, so it feels light. As your arm rises toward shoulder height, the leverage grows until, at the top, gravity is fighting you the hardest. Lifters call the easy part at the bottom the dead zone.
A cable changes the direction the resistance pulls. Set the pulley low and slightly behind you, and the cable pulls your arm along a line that stays roughly perpendicular to your arm through much more of the movement. The result is tension that stays fairly constant, and crucially, there is real load at the bottom where the dumbbell gives you nothing. That bottom position is also where the side delt is at its longest, which many lifters value for growth.
The dumbbell loads the top of the raise and lets you off at the bottom. The cable spreads the load across the whole range and keeps tension where the muscle is stretched.
Does the difference actually build more muscle?
This is where the theory meets the evidence, and the evidence is refreshingly clear. It is tempting to assume constant tension must win, but that is an assumption, not a result. A recent experimental study compared dumbbell and cable lateral raises directly. Trained men and women did five sets to failure twice a week for eight weeks, one arm style versus the other, with side delt thickness measured by ultrasound.
The finding: both grew the lateral deltoid similarly. Despite the very different resistance curves, neither variation produced meaningfully more muscle than the other over the study period. That is a genuinely useful result, because it means the choice is not a growth question at all. It is a practical one about which version you can load, progress, and repeat with good technique.
Stop agonising over which is better for your delts. Over a training block, they land in the same place. Pick the one that fits your gym, feels good on your shoulder, and that you will actually do set after set.
When to pick which
Since growth is roughly a wash, choose on the practical stuff. Here is how they compare on the things that actually differ.

- Pick the cable if you want constant tension, a stronger loaded stretch at the bottom, and small weight jumps to progress with. It is a great choice when the dead zone of the dumbbell bothers you.
- Pick the dumbbell if you train at home, want to hit both arms at once, or just prefer the simplicity. The heavy top-end is a perfectly good stimulus.
- Or use both. Many people run dumbbells on one day and cables on another, or dumbbells for straight sets and a cable for a burnout at the end. Variety here costs you nothing.
The technique that makes either one work
The tool matters less than how you use it. The same three errors ruin a lateral raise with a cable or a dumbbell, and fixing them does more for your side delts than switching implements ever will.
- Do not shrug. If your traps take over and your shoulders ride up toward your ears, the side delt is doing less. Keep your shoulders down and lead with the elbow, not the hand.
- Do not swing. Using momentum to heave the weight up robs the delt of tension. If you have to swing, the weight is too heavy. Control the way up and the way down.
- Lead with the elbow, pinky slightly up. Think about raising your elbow out to the side rather than lifting the weight with your hand. A slight tilt of the pinky up puts the side delt in a better line.
- Go lighter than your ego wants. The lateral raise is a small-muscle isolation movement. Moderate weight with clean form beats heavy weight with a swing every time.
Going too heavy and turning the raise into a shrug and swing. When the traps and momentum take over, the exact muscle you are trying to build gets the least work. Lighter and stricter wins.
