You have probably been told that added sugar is bad and natural sugar is fine, which is roughly true but for reasons most people get wrong. It is not that the sugar molecules are different. A cereal sweetened with date syrup is sweetened with free sugar, however wholesome date syrup sounds. And a nutrition label lumps all sugars into one total sugars line, so you often cannot see the split without checking the ingredients.
The practical trick is to read the ingredients list, not just the front of the pack. Anything ending in -ose, plus syrups, nectars, molasses, honey and fruit-juice concentrate, is free sugar under a different name. If several of those appear near the top of the list, the product is a sugar delivery system wearing a health costume, whatever the front says.
A pot of plain yoghurt or a bag of frozen fruit will list sugar, but that is intrinsic sugar you do not need to worry about. Save your attention for products where the sugar is added or freed from its packaging.
The practical takeaway
You do not need to fear sugar as a molecule, and you do not need to treat every gram the same. The useful habit is simple: eat the sugar that comes wrapped in whole food freely, and keep an eye on the sugar that arrives loose, fast and concentrated. Eat the orange, go easy on the juice. Enjoy fruit without guilt, and spend your real attention on drinks, sweets and sauces.
This also frees you from a lot of pointless worry. You do not need to fret about the sugar total on a bag of frozen berries, a pot of plain yoghurt or a sweet potato, because that sugar is doing you no harm and comes with real nutrition. Spending your energy there is effort wasted on the wrong target while the sugary latte and the afternoon fizzy drink slide by unquestioned.
Framed that way, added versus natural stops being a purity test and becomes a practical filter. The question is never just how much sugar, but how the sugar is packaged and how easy it is to overeat. Answer that, and you have most of what the science actually says.
