Check your contract for the notice period and the required cancellation method, send written notice and keep a copy, and cancel the direct debit only after the notice period ends. If they make it deliberately hard, a clear written cancellation plus a dated record of it is your best protection.
Is it normal to pay for a gym and never go? +
Extremely. A large share of members rarely attend, which is roughly the business model. If you have not been in months, cancelling and switching to pay-as-you-go or home workouts usually saves a lot.
How much does an unused gym membership really cost? +
If you pay around £40 a month and go twice, that is £240 a visit. Even going occasionally, the cost per actual workout is usually far higher than people expect, which is worth doing the maths on.
Why is the gym so busy in January? +
New-year resolutions flood the gym for a few weeks, then attendance drops sharply by February. If you can wait it out, the equipment frees up considerably.
